The story of how NOVA Optique + Eyecare came to be is anything but usual. This unique optometric practice was founded by Dr. Sara Varghai. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, she made Northern Virginia her home in 2014 after having lived in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for optometry school and back to Cleveland for a year for her residency.

Dr. Varghai’s journey in the optometric world didn’t start when she went to optometry school. She started out as an optometric technician in 2002 at an optometrist’s office where she learned to pretest patients, teach them how to insert and remove contact lenses for the first time, and educate patients on their prescription. She later decided to become an optician at LensCrafters, receiving her license in both spectacles and contact lenses. This gave her more of an expertise in what the best type of lenses would be for a specific prescription. After years of experience as an optician, Dr. Varghai decided she would like to pursue optometry as a career and started optometry school at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. After completion of optometry school in 2013, Dr. Varghai chose to pursue an optional one year residency at the Louis Stokes, Cleveland VA Medical Center. Ocular disease was the main emphasis of her residency, with some focus on specialty contact lenses and low vision rehabilitation.

Dr. Varghai’s passion is to help her patients have the best vision and prevent ocular diseases, while also having her patients look their best with fashion-forward eyeglasses. After her move to Northern Virginia, she found a void in the area of optometric offices that focused both on medical optometry, as well as fashion eyewear. So she set out to create a practice that would do just that, and that is when her vision for NOVA Optique + Eyecare became crystal clear.

Dr. Varghai’s journey to create the practice she had envisioned started a few years back. The first step was to find the right location. Her search took some time but as she found the perfect place at the beginning of 2020, thinking that was the perfect time to start an optometry practice, the pandemic began. Although, this slowed the process down quite a bit, Dr. Varghai was determined to open her doors as soon as she could. Next came her search for the right equipment to include in the office. Since one of her top priorities is to help her patients the best she can in detecting disease early, as well as giving the best care, the type of equipment used in the office was a big decision. She made sure she offered the latest technology. She also took time to choose the frame lines that she would offer in her optical. She wanted eyeglasses that were unique, yet quality made. These were only some of the decisions that had to be made when it came to creating the perfect practice.

NOVA Optique + Eyecare opened its doors on March 1st, 2021. Even though it has been a long road to get here, we are excited to finally be able to serve the Ballston neighborhood in Arlington. We are located at one of the retail spots at 672 Flats conveniently across from the Ballston parking garage. While there will be street parking available during part of the day, there will also be parking validation available all day for the garage. We are excited to be joining Good Company Doughnuts & Cafe, who have some of the best doughnuts and coffee in town!

Even though NOVA Optique + Eyecare incorporates both the boutique side of the optical and the medical side of optometry, it is all a seamless process of getting an eye exam and picking out stylish glasses. The purpose is to make going to the optometrist’s office as pleasant as possible, without making multiple stops. Although the health and well-being of our patients is our top priority, we also value customer service. Our goal is to make sure everyone walks out of our boutique with the ultimate patient experience.

Hope to see you soon!
